Complementary products

The Complementary products section displays products that complete a look or purchase: shoes with a dress, a frame with a print, a candle with a vase. Unlike algorithmic recommendations, these are curated manually for each source product.

Settings

  • Heading — The section heading. Default: Complete the look.
  • Subheading — Optional supporting text.
  • Heading alignment — Options: Left, Center, Right.
  • Maximum products to show — Cap on how many products to display.
  • Columns on desktop — Range: 2 to 5.
  • Color scheme — The color scheme applied to the section. Default: scheme-1.

Curating complementary products

To select complementary products, install the Shopify Search & Discovery app from the Shopify App Store. With it installed:

  1. Open Shopify admin > Apps > Search & Discovery > Product recommendations.
  2. Pick a source product.
  3. Add the products you want to recommend as complementary.
  4. Save.

Pave fetches these manual recommendations with intent: complementary. If no complementary products are configured for a source product, the section is hidden automatically on that product’s page.

Tips

  • Curate for top sellers first. You won’t have time to set up complementary picks for every product. Start with the products that drive most traffic.
  • Three to four products is the typical sweet spot. Above four, the section becomes a generic grid rather than a curated complete-the-look.
  • Cross-collection picks — The most powerful complementary picks bridge collections. A coat from outerwear paired with a scarf from accessories drives multi-collection purchases.
